Comparative adhesion of chemically and physically crosslinked poly(acrylic acid)-based hydrogels to soft tissues

In the design of polymeric biomaterials for soft tissue adhesion, careful regulation interactions between material and is critical. order to improve efficacy bioadhesives, a greater understanding relationship their chemical resulting adhesion mechanisms required. this work, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was functionalised either through bromoalkene functionalisation via nucleophilic substitution or 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMTMM)-mediated conjugation. Novel PAA-based hydrogels were developed different types (chemistry) crosslinks crosslinking mechanisms. Two these gels crosslinked UV initiation using Irgacure 2959 as photoinitiator, another gel used visible light-mediated with eosin Y final utilised physical interaction boronic acid moieties polysaccharide mannan. Oscillatory rheometry characterise mechanical properties gels, including gelation kinetics. Tensile testing hydroxyl methacrylate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), means studying interfaces defined surface chemistry. Finally, tissues (porcine epicardium keratinized gingiva) studied lap shear tensile testing. Our results indicate variety factors responsible hydrogel/soft adhesion; include mechanics, bulk mechanics gel, weak non-specific forces, strong covalent bonding. Tests confirm effect biochemistry on thiyl-bonded displaying particularly (particularly epicardium). It hoped that presented provide insight improved rational adhesion.
